this is a hard one to address. basically, lots of people have asked me
to tell them what will be in the new version and when it will be
released (to be fair, some have asked what will be in it and not asked
the dreaded 'when' question).

there's a reason software companies (and game companies in particular)
generally don't answer questions like these. i could give an answer and
a schedule or feature list now, and it could drive the way modders work.
and it could be wrong. because that's how software is - its more like
writing a book than building a bridge. sure, bridge's are almost always
late and over budget, but at least you know when you start what it will
look like when you're done. that's not true for authors, and its not
true for programmers - especially game programmers.

when you see screenshots and feature lists for a game is when its 'code
complete', which means no more programming is being done, only testing.
the next version of targetware isn't at that stage yet. and when it is,
i'll give it to you! i'm all for public alphas. besides, i can't make
the screenshots, since the modders do all the art, hehehe.

on the other hand, i can violate everything i just said, and tell you a
few things:

1. the next version will have a new scene graph (i.e. the code that
draws things in 3D). it will be much more powerful, and also faster.
2. it will have a new animation system that replaces 'link numbers' with
names, and allows modders to create their own new animation names.
3. the new terrain system will have a round earth rather than a flat
one, will deal with position as longitude/latitude, and will have vector
features, rather than 'painted on' coastlines, roads, rivers, etc.
4. the next version will have a new physics library (i.e. the code that
make things in the world work).
5. the major feature of the new physics library is scripting. modders
will be able to create new part types, new object types, create new
behaviours, all with lua scripts.
6. the new version will be based around campaigns. the scenario system
will disappear. instead, gameplay will be scriptable - modders will be
able to create whatever gameplay they want (heck, its even possible to
script a scenario system!).

the other thing i can tell you is that i will do everything possible to
make sure all the work that's modders are doing Right Now with 0.64 will
be compatible with the next version. i'll provide conversion tools when
needed, i'll make the next version read old file formats when possible,
and i'll generally make sure you don't lose any of your hard work.

there's one place i can't promise that though: terrains. they need such
a major overhaul in order to incorporate a spherical earth and vector
terrain features that i can't promise that terrain work you do now will
be compatible with the next version. i'll do everything i can, but i
don't want to mislead anybody on this.

so, in summary: the next version is going to be amazing. trust me. a
massive upgrade, essentialy a targetware 2.0 in all but name. and its
going to bring you guys a level of power for modding that is on a whole
new level.

Ja verim, ze prvych realnych ukazok BoBky sa dockame uz na tohtorocnom E3 v maji.

pokud se na tom mam divat z pohledu naproste vetsiny fandu simulatoru, tak nevyrovna, ale jak jsem rikal kouzlo TW pro me vezi nekde jinde...

je nepochybne jasne, ze az budou screenshoty z BoBu tak se vsici posadime na prdel (coz neznamena, ze vsechny efekty, ktere nas na prdel posadi budou podle realu, ze Mrknutí, ale doufam, ze Oleg dosahne i obdobne urovni co se FM tyce...

Kdybych si vybíral simulátor podle počtu hráčů, tak nehraji IL2, ale CS.
