To the members of the vwings.net forums,
My friend Vasek is translating this for me.
Greetings, I am Wailwulf, the maker http://www.youtub...CurKtdYN60 the JU88 torpedo attack, or as VGR_j4ck41 described as a massacre.
I would like to thank ZVP_MIKA getting my video over a 100 hits in two day's time on Youtube. I am glad that you liked it enough to let others know of it.
I would also like to say thank you to Doktorkop as your videos have inspired me to work on IL-2 films
With the help of my friend Vasek, I have been able to get a good idea of some of the criticism on my little film.
This movie was made for the pilots that fly in Bomber Night every Friday Night, and server operators for the Warbirds of Prey servers (Spits vs. 109s, Zekes vs. Wildcats, & Spits vs. 109s Mods) where Bomber Night takes place.
I was in the shower and the opening of the song Sweet Cherry Wine popped into my head along with a group of bombers heading off to kill and mayhem, an action completely contrary to words and feeling of the song. The two shots from 2:45 to 3:20 (moving through the bomber formation cutting to the bomber group) is fairly close to what I visualized in that moment. Everything else built from there.
For those who didn't like the modern sound of the music, or any music at all, I do understand, for there are time I feel the same. Even my roommate felt that the song was wrong, nut he was more thinking about Nationalities, that a Tommy James and the Shondells song would have worked better with American B-25 Mitchell bombers instead of the Luftwaffe. If I was making a film with a serious story line the music would have been completely wrong. If this was a film of real aircraft from the war, yes I would have preferred to hear the actual engines roaring instead of any music. But this was a bunch of guys sitting at their computers, drinking beer, and flying together relaxing at the end of the week.
To VGR_j4ck41's criticism of my use of the camera. Yes, I did want to be original from most other IL-2 films. The reason being most IL-2 film makers do not think about what the camera shots look like. The planes in every shot are in the center because the game puts the planes there. It make for smoother editing, but makes for boring compositions. I have seen airplanes seem to twist, roll, swivel from one point for the film maker has the camera set to External View. What I set for myself was that every shot should be conceivably be able to be filmed in a real life situation.
All my shots, I feel, could have been filmed by a person with a camera, be they laying on the ground, in the back of a moving truck, hanging out the window, or flying in another aircraft. Was I trying to show off my originality? Yes, but not in the take-off sequence. Smiley My main show off was in the shot flying through the bomber formation and focusing on the lead plane (2:45-3:15).
There are a number of shots, mostly in the combat sequence, I should have shortened, but it is hard to kill one's own creations.
Thank you for view my film, I appreciate the criticisms as I can use them to get better, or at least be more conscious about the way I put my films together.
to make it correct (just in case) -> I didn`t criticized how you worked with camera positions but i didn`t like how often you made cuts - especially when take off... I mean ... 10 cuts just for engine starting, taxiing and take off? ... i know that it`s just my own feeling but ... but .. it`s boring and disturbing cus it`s not the right time and place
EDIT> u know ... sometimes less is more

I do appreciate the criticism, most just reply with, "That is cool!" which is not helpful.
This video was for a bit of practice in some ways.
A bit of a back story, back in July last year, we had a Bomber Night with B-24's that was just fantastic. We stayed in formation, we were literally under attack for 15 minutes straight, with at least one, if not multiple attacks a minute. Most made it to target, and most of those made it back to base, though badly damaged (I landed with two engines out). I started to work on my version of Twelve O'clock High, being very inspired by what Doktorkop has done with his films of IL-2. After a hundred-fifty plus hours of recording tracks, working on 3d-modeling (which I had never done before) and experimenting of putting characters into the footage I had taken, and then last September my computer crashed. I lost 99% of what I had done.
That of course just killed me in wanting to make a film for a long while. I bought a new system, did the Bomber Nights, but they just didn't give me the inspiration or resources for the story line I wanted. Then back in mid-February I was able to get a hold of tracks from that July Bomber Night, not just one, but three separate tracks, two bombers and a p-47's.
My inspiration returned, but I had a lot of things that needed to be rebuilt (like all the 3d modeling I had done to add characters to the film).
Now back to this film, I started to do it to practice and try things out for my B-24 epic. One was to give the camera mod a workout and learn what I could and could not do. Another was to practice editing, in which I learned that I need to be very conscious about what I record, a number of great shots were not used for they couldn't be edited in smoothly, even with a dissolve. (In fact, some shots were mirrored so that I could use them and keep the action moving in the right direction.
One of the things my B-24 epic had when I was making it is the take-off sequence, what I did with my JU-88 film was edit the take-off sequence to part of music I am thinking about using for the B-24 film. If I do get my B-24 film done, it will probably be longer with more shots (I know, the opposite of what you would like), but the take off sequence is like an act in a play, and what i am trying to do with it is create tension about what the mission will be and how it will turn out.
Now in my JU-88 film, since it was built around my concept camera shot to a pop song, yes the take-off sequence is at odds in feeling and mood to the song portion. Hopefully when I get the B-24 film done, the take-off sequence will instead add the tension and anticipation that will enhance the rest of the film.
As is, there are two things I would change in the take-off sequence, one is for the engine starting from inside the cockpit would be to pan the camera so it is facing the Sun, so the edit to under the gear is smoother, The second is of the shots of the planes actually taking off, the shot at 1:45, the lone bomber flying away, should be removed for it is basically a duplicate of the following shot with the multiple bombers taking off.
I do appreciate the criticism and the clarification, and thank you for bearing with this overly long reply.

Ahoj,
